Three students on their internship/thesis at Behr
Simone Hiller, intern/thesis candidate
How did Behr first come to your attention? I first heard of Behr from an acquaintance. He came to the company straight after his studies and had only good things to say about it. That was the reason why I knew the name Behr, even though I am not from the area. I came across this particular internship via a job portal on the Internet. I searched using the criteria "automotive suppliers", "purchasing (raw materials)" and "location: Stuttgart". The intern position "Purchasing - Raw Materials and Semi-Finished Products" was exactly what I was looking for.
First of all, the job description really appealed to me. Then the interview went very well. The company presentation was convincing and the interviewers were friendly. I was very pleased by the quick feedback on my application and the interview.
Knowledge from my studies helps me to understand how things are connected. In raw materials purchasing in particular, my finance specializiation helps me with topics like "hedging". It is interesting to see how processes you have learned about in your studies are applied in practice.
Even as an intern or thesis candidate you are given responsibility and taken seriously. It is interesting working in the automotive supply industry. The customer-supplier relationships provide the company with exciting challenges and are particularly impressive. I find the high-tech products and the constant search for better solutions appealing. Other advantages of Behr are the positive work climate and the helpful team members.
There is a good level of contact with other interns and thesis candidates. You have the chance to get to know each other at the weekly interns' lunch. You make contacts that are also useful after the internship.
I am also one of those 20 % who have first done a half-year internship and then gone on to write their thesis with Behr. Once you have worked for a company for six months, you really know it well. You understand the procedures, for example, and you have contacts you can turn to if necessary. You also know your way around the user programs and have a certain routine for specific tasks.
I first heard about Behr from a friend who also did his intership here. Then I looked for information about the company on the Internet. Behr is one of the leading suppliers of engine cooling and automotive air conditioning, so as I am very interested in these areas, Behr was my first choice. I also really liked the company's international focus.
After my interview at Behr I was immediately accepted. Since I had heard only good things about the company up until then, especially about the pleasant work climate, I immediately accepted too. I just had a good feeling about it.
I have been studying automotive engineering in Shanghai and at the University of Applied Sciences in Bingen. In my studies the focus is always on the vehicle as a whole. In my work here I can make very good use of my general knowledge from my studies, and also extend that knowledge. This helps me to get to grips with more specialized areas, especially in the field of condensers. I can also gain practical experience with design software here.
I get a very good level of support at Behr. I can always come to my supervisor if I have a question or need his support. I am also indluded in projects. For instance, I take part in the regular departmental duscussion sessions. These discussion focus on current topics and on the status of particular projects. I have also been allowed to attend tests in the climatic wind tunnel, and to visit a location in France.
There are regular activities for interns, such as lectures and guided tours of the climatic wind tunnel. Once a week the interns and thesis students all eat lunch together. I also have contact with colleagues from shanghai. I often meet them for a meal, too.
I will also be writing my theses here, starting in summer 2010. Why am I doing this? Working for Behr is very interesting and varied. There are a variety of topics, and most importantly, topics that interest me. It is also an advantage to do your thesis in a company where you have previously done and internship: you already have the contacts and are familiar with the work atmosphere. For me the modern research and testing methods are an incentive to stay with Behr.
Behr is a company with a global presence. You notice that in you day-to-day work, too. Its corporate culture encourages innovation, which makes it very future-focused and sustainable.
Daniel Layer, intern/thesis candidate
Behr is very well known in the Stuttgart area. Since I come from that region, and because of my interest in the automotive industry, I had known the name Behr for a long time. My course of study, "Automotive Engineering", at the University of Applied Sciences in Esslingen included practical work on development projects. Behr is one of our sources of support for this.
I found an interesting job advertisement, with a job description that suited me very well. My interest in the supply business and the quick acceptance of my application made it easy for me to choose Behr. Since the field of thermodynamics fascinates me, I am delighted to be able to write my thesis with Behr, too. There is a good atmosphere in the team and I feel very comfortable here.
The field of thermodynamics, which forms the basis of my internship and my final thesis, is only one part of my studies. Behr offers me the opportunity to extend the knowledge I have gained so far. During my work at Behr I have learnt a lot of new things. I can gain theoretical knowledge by working on simulations. I gain practical experience from measurements and tests in the climatic wind tunnel, In my job I also work with presentations and documentation.
During my internship I had a graduate engineer as my direct contact person. When it comes to the final thesis you operate more independently. When questions arise, you get suport not just from one supervisor but from the whole team.
In my opinion the work climate plays an important part. People were always very helpful to me, and I was really made to feel part of the team. I take on worthwhile tasks that I work on both in the team and independently.
Despite its size, Behr still has the feel of a medium-sized company, with short lines of communication and flat hierarchies. Behr has a global presence, with many international locations, and is one of the leading OEMs in the industry.
